The serial number encryption for Gruen movements in the405410420 & 425families has been cracked…or so is hoped.Every few months brings new refinements.
This table is for the405,420and425based calibers and is a guide for determining the approximate date of manufacture of a movement. It’s most applicable for calibers405,406,410,411,420,421,425,426and their sweep-seconds versions.
The latest refinement includes extending the table backwards in time to1939.
To use these new1939and1940/41dates,the movement needs to have these two characteristics:
1.There is nothing written on the ratchet wheel
2.Veri-Thin is stamped on the “Train Bridge”

Masonic Tavannes Silver Repousse Pocket Watch Symbols on Dial Running 1900
If anyone knows anything more about this watch or can correct any assumptions I may have made, that would be appreciated. statler@outlook.com
This is an original Masonic Tavannes pocket watch in an ornate silver “repousse style” silver case probably from the 1891 to 1920 era that appears to be in good running condition. I would compare the rarity of this specialty watch to the Dudley Masonic Watch. I have not been able to find any information about from the company or the internet about this particular watch. Many Masonic watches I have seen were modified after the watch was made or simply had a dial dropped into a case and movement. This particular watch with an exceptional case and dial that appears to have been assembled at the Tavannes factory is most unusual and rare. This could be one of the most rare of the time.
This watch has been part of a private collection for over 80 years and will be coming to market sometime in the future once the complete documentation is finished.
CASE:
The case is hallmarked .900 silver repousse style with all the Masonic symbols
On back cover is stamped: “A la gloire du grand architecte de l’univers”
There are two numbers on the case: 9117600 and 236. I assume that the first number is the movement serial number. 236 appears to be a case number since it also appears in two locations on the case.
DIAL:
Fine glass porcelain dial comes with black Masonic symbols instead of numbers at each hour. Excellent condition: very fine hairline from 4 to center, that I could only see using a loop.
MOVEMENT:
Stem Wind — Stem Set
Marked “Travannes Watch Co.” on movement.
No serial number noted on movement.
I believe that the balance wheel may be gold.
This watch has been running strongly for over 20 minutes on my desk and after a couple of hours appears to be within a minute of when set to time on my computer. Watch was probably last serviced (cleaned and oiled) in the 1970s.
SIZE: The case measures 50+ mm in diameter. The dial is just under 43mm diameter.
Elgin Pocket Serial Numbers
NOTES: During the early 20th century, there were several horological companies that made the Masonic Pocket Watches and apparently professionals who provided after market additions and/or alternations. Freemasonry has been around since the late 16th century and has been suggested as an outgrowth of the Templars. The best known Masonic watches came from William Wallace Dudley, a watchmaker as well as a Freemason whose company ceased production in 1925. Waltham also made several Masonic watches, in both open and hunter cases with painted porcelain dials. Elgin, Illinois, Hampton and other American Watch companies made watches with dials and sometimes skeletonized movements similar to Dudley.
Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF), also known as the Three Link Fraternity stood for Friendship, Love and Truth. The American group is derived from the similar British Oddfellows service organizations which came into being during the 18th century. They came to be known as “Odd Fellows” because at that time, it was odd to find people organized for the purpose of giving aid to those in need and of pursuing projects for the benefit of all mankind. The Independent Order of Odd Fellows was founded in North American in Baltimore, Maryland, on April 26, 1819 when Thomas Wildey and four members of the Order from England instituted Washington Lodge No. 1.
TAVANNES COMPANY HISTORY: Tavannes was founded by Henri Sandoz in 1891, and was merged with the CYMA watch Company owned by the Schwob family in 1892. Under the CYMA, Tavannes and TACY names, they were one of the most prolific Swiss manufacturers of complete watches in the 1920s and 30s. According to Travannes in a recent email, the records for the early watches were destroyed in a fire in 1944 during the Second World War.
